Falling in Love with Fall/Winter 2012

Warm sweaters, boots and tailored outerwear, layering scarves on top of leather jackets… In my world, all seasons are not created equal, with a clear preference towards Fall/Winter, and this year my favorite designers definitely did not disappoint. From the chic and forward thinking looks at Chanel to the unconventional genius at Alexander McQueen, the trends of the upcoming season are raising the bar for influential trend setters and admiring followers everywhere. After sufficiently stalking the F/W look books, I’ve come up with a personal list of “must have” trends, a designer wardrobe that my millionaire self would own, and look-a-likes that I can reasonably afford, to make sure that my transition to winter is as fabulous as possible.

Layering, a favorite aspect of the fall season, takes on a whole new meaning when the designers start playing with different textures. From Alexander McQueen creating a floor length feathery gown, to Jason Wu presenting a leather military jacket with fur sleeves, or the Chanel Ready-To-Wear line pairing a fur jacket with metallic lace-like trousers, this season is definitely the time to take chances with layering textures. For a wearable take on this trends, try this jacquard skirt from Target paired with this faux fur jacket from Delia’s (now on sale!!), with these sheer houndstooth tights from Express (currently buy one get one free!).  Complete the look with some black booties and funky accessories and you’re ready to rock your runway.

Another must wear for every woman is the peplum trend that’s been seen on the runways of Zac Posen, Lanvin, Carolina Herrera, and The Row – just to name a few. Pair a peplum top with skinny jeans or a pencil skirt to accentuate your waist, finish the look with pointed toed stilettos to elongate your legs and finish this classy and fashion forward look. Aren’t ready to drop the funds on a designer peplum look? Check out these affordable and adorable options, all for less than $35.

You can now officially wear white after Labor Day, according to designers Elie Saab, Versace, Valentino and Alexander McQueen who all sent numerous all white ensembles down their runways. The “No White” rule still applies to white linen pants and white shoes, which should remain off limits until spring, so if you’re going to rock this winter white look, stick with wool, cotton, satin and silk. To add a little definition to your ensemble, try mixing a little metallic silver, like Elie Saab and Alexander McQueen. Try a silver leather jacket like this one from Target! I can also personally attest to seeing a silver Calvin Klein leather jacket at TJ Maxx last week. It was gorg.

Instead of going with a traditional LBD at your next outing, take a cue from designers YSL, Jil Sander, Dior and Valentino and dress in a head-to-toe jumpsuit. Keep it classic with a silhouette that gives you an hourglass figure by cinching in at the waist, and length that grazes the floor. For a more daring look, find an interesting neckline like the keyhole theme from Jil Sander, or opt for a bold color like the vibrant red from Valentino. Or make a chic statement with a muted pastel and a high neckline similar to the jumpsuit that graced Dior’s runway. Check out these affordable styles to add this trend to your wardrobe!

This season, burgundy is definitely the new black; so don’t be afraid to switch it up with this head to toe hue. Also, leather is no longer reserved for jackets! Try a leather skirt or top to switch it up. And most importantly, pick trends that make you feel beautiful and fit your personal style, because “fashions fade; style is eternal” – Yves Saint Laurent.

Transitions to FALL For

As the leaves begin to change, and the air gets crisp, I can’t help but feel a sense of longing to be able to wear some of my favorite looks from summer – the frilly dress, high wasted shorts, tight skirts, maxi dresses, and strappy wedges. Fortunately, this woe-begotten feeling is completely unnecessary. With a few simple alterations, with pieces you probably already have in your fall repertoire, these summer staples can be worn well into the chilling fall months.

For that frilly, feminine dress that you wore all summer long, and are desperately trying to sport to class or on a dinner date, simply add a belt and a blazer and you’re golden for the next few months! Add dark tights and heeled booties to dress it up, or keep it casual with boots and cable-knit socks. **Insider tip: for a great pair of legwarmers to wear with boots, check out a dance wear store and pick up a pair of long ballet legwarmers!

Shorts, an obvious go-to for summer, can still be your obvious go-to for fall with a few quick and fun variations. For a funky vibe, layer the shorts on top of patterned or colored tights with socks and boots! Or keep it classic with black opaque tights and a pair of lace-up oxfords. Either way, you’ll be sure to start some trends with this chic shorts saver. Target always has fun options for colored and patterned tights, and check out these oxfords from Forever 21 for only $25!

This past summer, almost every ensemble revolved around the tight high-wasted skirt that practically every fashionista invested in – in every color. I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to pack those pieces into my clothing storage. Ready for the quick fix? Grab a chunky sweater and a skinny belt and start layering! Mix and match bright colors with fun patterns to keep with the F/W trends. See how H&M pulls of this look here:

Maxi dresses and floor length skirts stole the summer scene, and with a simple addition to your shoe rack, you can keep on rockin’ this look as long as the sidewalks are cleared of snow! Instead of pairing this piece with the strappy sandal like you have been all summer, go for a chunky ankle boot instead. It’s bold, it’s bohemian – it’s completely fabulous! I love this look with the Lita from Jeffrey Campbell, but if you’re not willing to drop $160 on a pair of booties, try this other style on for size for $50!

Typically, I don’t condone favoritism, but when it comes to my shoe rack, I feel as if I’m unable to control the fact that I have a clear favorite. A pair of strappy wedges was my summer shoe staple – I seriously wore them at least once per week. To integrate them into my fall wardrobe, I love pairing them with socks folded down to the ankle. It’s a super chic and feminine way to warm up a pair of summery heels! Check out the Marc Jacobs FW11 RTW collection for some inspiration…

Talkin Bout Boots and Boys

Right around this time, every year, I get extremely antsy for the fall fashion trends… big sweaters, casual blazers, and my personal favorite, BOOTS! Fortunately for me, and pretty much every other girl I know, boots are a huge trend this fall, with some funky variations. Obviously, most of these trends are going to be available at Steve Madden (boot heaven, in case you didn’t know), but if you’re not willing to spend around $200 for a single pair, there are some chic look-a-likes at bargain prices.

Probably the most versatile boot to ever grace the market is this season’s “multi-way” – basically any boot or shoe that can be worn, you guessed it, multiple ways! An easy and super chic version of this trend is the knee-high boot that can be folded down to a half-calf boot, like the Berllinn by Steve Madden, which can be yours for the low-low price of $339.95. But why not go for this Mossimo for Target shoe for $34.99? And to answer your question, yes, these are in fact two different pairs of shoes, and yes, they are in fact practically identical. Click the photos to be redirected to the item on the store’s website.

For all you eighties babies out there, the combat boot is officially back, and this masculine-chic trend is definitely one you don’t want to pass up. Feminize it by pairing the boot with a more frilly dress, or channel your inner biker chick with skinny jeans and a leather jacket. Either way, you’re sure to be a showstopper. Aldo has a pair for $100, but I personally prefer one of the many versions at Forever 21 – they have a little extra flair, and are about a third of the price. Check out this studded version for $32.80, or this classic version for $35.80.

The lace-up bootie is fabulous, period. It’s an updated take on the town-shoe, and a chic way to integrate sky high wedges into any outfit. Steve Madden recently introduced a version of this trend with the Thronne, for $159.95, and the online store UrbanOG one-upped them with this incredible look-alike for $27.80. Get on it fast though, fashionistas, they tend to sell out in a flash!
